PROLA now supports OpenURL, you can edit your link resolver preferences here. Setting an OpenURL resolver will enable the display of OpenURL links in the references.

Updated Look and Feel
The look and feel of the PROLA interface has been updated to bring it in line with the redesign of all of the homepages for the APS journals. PROLA now features a more modern look with tabbed article pages, streamlined navigation links, and several other minor enhancements. Let us know what you think: prola@aps.org

A substantially improved search interface is now available. New features include:

  • A greatly improved interface for viewing, navigating, and refining search results
  • Search result ranking by citation counts (as provided by publishers participating in CrossRef's Forward Linking program)
  • Easy searching on articles chosen as PRL Editors' Suggestions, freely available through our 'Free To Read' program, or featured in Physical Review Focus
  • Improved speed

Improved Forward Linking
PROLA now displays citing articles from publishers that participate in the CrossRef forward linking program. The interface for citing articles has also been completely redone to allow convenient browsing by journal and year. For example: Citations of Einstein's EPR paper. Please note: Data for non-APS articles provided by the publisher of the respective journals through CrossRef. Any errors or omissions are the responsibility of the primary publisher.

  • The American Physical Society is one of nine publishers participating in a CrossRef pilot project that uses Google to provide full-text searching of scholarly research. The full text of all APS journal articles (all the way back to 1893) has been indexed by Google. Try the CrossRef Search at http://prola.aps.org/xrs.html.

  • Starting in May, users who are accessing PROLA content via an institutional subscription now see a message on each abstract page informing them that access is through the subscription. The name of the institution is part of the message.

  • 1999 material is now part of PROLA.

  • The PROLA search engine (which indexes all APS journal material published from 1893 to present) is now freely available to all users. Access to the full text of articles and other online journal features still requires a paid subscription.

October 4, 2002

  • Links to the Chemical Abstracts Service (www.cas.org) and to the NASA Astrophysics Data System (adsabs.harvard.edu) have been added. They are denoted by CAS and ADS, respectively, in the references sections of the papers.

  • The main PROLA server is now located at a colocation facility in New York City. This change should result in much better bandwidth and accesssibility.
  • The search engine has been replaced to give better performance.

  • The last full issue missing from PROLA has now been filled in - Phys. Rev. C, volume 2, issue 6 is now online.

  • Search engine has been updated to include current material as well as PROLA material. Abstracts of search results can be viewed even for current material. A link is provided on the search abstract page for getting to the article in the current contents journals.

  • 1998 material is now part of PROLA.
  • Linking to external resources (SPIN and INSPEC via AIP's OJPS server, SLAC's SPIRES database, and other journals via CrossRef) has been extended to all of PROLA (formerly, was just for 1997).
  • New look and feel to integrate with the rest of the APS journals.
  • Missing references for thousands of 1985-1995 articles now available.
  • Much better handling of abbreviated journal references in which journal and/or author list are suppressed in original text for 1985-1998 material.
  • Many other small bug fixes.

October 31, 2001

  • Essentially all volumes that needed rescanning for the period 1985-1996 have been completed. About 15 issues (out of approximately 1700 total) still need to be completed.
  • Reviews of Modern Physics, volume 20, issue 3 is now online. Only Phys. Rev. C, volume 2, issue 6 is missing in the PROLA collection and we should be able to fill that in by the end of the year.

  • New scans for Phys. Rev. A-D up to volume 46 and Phys. Rev. Lett. volume 70 now online.

  • The first PROLA mirror, hosted by the Cornell University Library, is now available. Some users may have better network connectivity to the Cornell server and this will help ensure 24/7 access to PROLA contents for all PROLA subscribers. The server may be accessed either via http://cornell.mirror.aps.org/ or http://prola.library.cornell.edu/.

  • Substantially cleaned up reference sections (converted from legacy data) now online.

  • All 1997 APS journal volumes have been moved into PROLA.
  • 1981 - 1984 volumes of the Physical Review journals are now available in PROLA.
  • All of Reviews of Modern Physics from 1981 - 1997 is now available in PROLA.
  • Pre-1985 material has been scanned at 600 dpi - this makes files larger, but much higher quality. Also, greyscale figures are now available as separate JPEG's for this material.
  • References are now displayed with abstracts (for subscribers).
  • References are now linked to external resources (for 1997 material only at the moment). External resources include AIP's SPIN and INSPEC databases, SLAC's SPIRES HEP database and online reports and publications, other publishers via CrossRef, and to Medline. More resources will be added over the next several months and all PROLA material will be enhanced shortly to display links.
  • Articles in PROLA can now be incorporated in the AIP's OJPS Article Collection service
  • Non-subscribers may now purchase individual articles with a credit card via AIP's Quick Article Buy service.
  • Article text display (from converted raw troff and TeX) has been removed.
